Michael Vowell is an author, chaplain, Bible teacher, and former Messianic rabbi whose work has centered on Scripture, spiritual formation, leadership, discipleship, and compassionate care.
After more than two decades in pastoral ministry, Michael now serves in chaplaincy while continuing to teach, write, mentor, and develop resources for people who want a faith that is intellectually rooted, spiritually mature, and lived with courage in the real world.
Ministry & Leadership
Michael’s ministry background spans pastoral leadership, church planting, Messianic Jewish congregational ministry, biblical teaching, discipleship, mentoring, and spiritual care. For more than two decades, he has worked at the intersection of biblical truth and the complicated realities of human life.
His teaching has consistently emphasized the Hebrew Scriptures, the Jewish world of the Bible, the formation of mature disciples, and the conviction that sound theology should produce a transformed life.
Chaplaincy & Care
Today, Michael serves as a chaplain, bringing the same pastoral calling into spaces marked by grief, uncertainty, transition, crisis, hope, and spiritual searching.
Chaplaincy has deepened a central conviction in his ministry: sometimes the most faithful thing a person can offer is not a quick answer, but a grounded presence — attentive, compassionate, truthful, and willing to remain in the room when life is difficult.
EDUCATION & SCHOLARSHIP
Rooted in the Biblical Text
Michael earned a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, with a focus in Old Testament and Semitic languages, and a Bachelor of Arts in World Missions from Moody Bible Institute, with a focus in Jewish Studies.
His academic work reflects a long-standing interest in the Hebrew Bible, messianic prophecy, Jewish-Christian relations, biblical languages, spiritual formation, leadership, and the practical life of faith.

Michael is a contributing author to this major Moody Publishers reference work examining messianic prophecy throughout the Old Testament.
Biblical Literacy
His public Bible teaching includes sessions on the book of Jonah and the Names of God, bringing together close reading of Scripture, biblical theology, and the Jewish context of the text.

MEDIA & PUBLIC MINISTRY
Teaching in the Public Square
Michael’s public ministry has included biblical literacy events, Messianic Jewish and Christian gatherings, congregational teaching, pastoral leadership, church planting, community service, and disaster-relief ministry.
In 2017, The New York Times featured Michael in its reporting on faith, prayer, and neighbor-to-neighbor service in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. The story followed volunteers helping clear the flooded home of an elderly widow in Wharton County, Texas, and included Michael’s reflection on finding evidence of God in people caring for one another.

A later Houston Chronicle report also described Michael’s Hebrew teaching at a large Houston Passover gathering of Christians and Messianic Jews, reflecting another long-running part of his ministry: helping people understand the biblical story in its Jewish and historical setting.
